Rising population in higher density housing has created a situation where the roads cannot cope and congestion is becoming more frequent. As a commuter cyclist I’m a bike advocate but also being a motorist see the need for a shared space and mutually agreeable solutions.
Lake Road has been the focus of local concern for decades and there are clearly no easy solutions. The current scenario with bike lanes alongside the road is sub-optimal for both groups as squeeze points endanger cyclists and the bike lanes impede traffic flow. Diverting cyclists onto an alternative cycle route holds promise but it would need to be a feasible alternative for them.
I sense no easy remedy, particularly as traffic flow stemming from new housing continues to escalate, but am open minded in terms of working with pressure groups to improve the current scenario.
